Dear Friends,
One of the strongest images I carry with me from this summer happened our last evening at Confirmation Camp. During that evening, the kids are led down to the boathouse by counselors bearing drums and guitars. They sing raucously at first – all those camp songs they’ve now come to know and love - and then at dusk, the songs slow down. Three canoes with torch bearers paddle across the lake, illuming our way in the darkness with representative light of the Trinity, and as the canoes reach land, the torch bearers lead all to worship. The three torches join their fire in one Christ candle in the sanctuary, and the singing continues. The camp counselors act out monologues of Bible characters who answered God’s call when they were the same age as many of our campers – Samuel and Mary the Mother of God, for example share their faith stories, and the spiritual gifts God has empowered them with to accomplish their mission, and then communion is shared and candles are distributed to everyone to hold as the worship concludes in singing and prayer. During the recessional song, the campers are dismissed outside the chapel, gathering with their cabin members in small circles. The camp counselors make an arc, still holding their candles, and the ministers and youth leaders meander among the campers, continuing to hold our candles and singing.
One by one, then, each of the campers are called to join their counselor who has been their chaperone, their mentor, their constant companion throughout their camp journey, begins to witness to the camper what spiritual gifts he or she has seen in them during the week. The conversation always ends with the counselor praying for their camper, that the gifts they’ve named may continue to grow in them as they seek to find their place serving in God’s Church.
The campers return to their groups very often speechless, with tears streaming down their faces. After the last student is called, in what is always a humbling moment, the counselor then approaches the minister whose children they’ve guided all week, and begins witnessing to us what spiritual gifts they’ve seen in us! I know some of you are thinking, as ministers, shouldn’t we kind of know what gifts we have by now, but dear friends, God continues to work in ministers lives too, revealing new gifts and new calls, and it is one of the dearest moments of my year to hear the Holy Spirit’s call through the words and prayers of these counselors – these college students – we’ve traveled with all week!
This year, as I expected, that moment during the week was a “high” again among campers and ministers alike. It made me wonder also, how often we as a church declare for one another what spiritual gifts we see in each other, and then pray intentionally for each other to be able to develop and use those gifts?! Most of us have traveled now with one another far longer than the five days the counselors have with their campers by that point, so it seems we might have much to say to one another if we only take the time to intentionally do so.
In the next month, I will be writing notes to each of you personally to tell you about the gifts I have witnessed in you in our time together. Some of the gifts you may be well aware of; some may come as a surprise to you. I will also be praying for each of you that God’s Spirit continues to breathe life on you that you might develop these gifts.
I encourage you to also take time to share the spiritual gifts you see in one another and take the time to write someone a note, send an email, give a drop on facebook, zap a text, or even do it the old fashioned way – face to face – and encourage a member of your church family in their ministry.
A spiritual gift is not necessarily your job. It certainly can be part of it, and part of the tasks we undertake in our jobs, home, relationships and at church. But they can also be things like “You have a smile that brightens a room.” “You show up whenever you are needed.” “You amaze me and inspire me with the ways you share your resources.”
Spiritual gifts have no age limit and can grow and emerge differently in our lives. To think more intentionally about our gifts, I am also working on developing a program in which we might spend some time together in a course listening for what they are and how we might be called to use them.

The Book Club is reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett this summer. We will gather to discuss it on Tuesday, September 2.
Adult Bible Study Series @ 6:30am
The Thursday 6:30am Bible Study will be watching Jim Nestingen’s “Dusting Off Theology” Video Series during the month of August. We will meet at Gloria Dei. The series is about “Living With the Church” and each tape is about 45 minutes long which will leave us with some time for discussion. All are welcome to join the group!
Tape 1 - The People of God - The blessings and frustrations of living with the Church.
Tape 2 - Gathered – The Church as the Kingdom of God and as a human institution.
Tape 3 - Hear the Word – What the Word is, how we hear it, and how we speak it.
Tape 4 - Receive the Sacraments – The visible words and the controversy around them.
Vacation Bible School
VBS is planned for Aug. 15th-Aug. 16th. The children will be making breakfast for the congregation on the 16th. Breakfast will be served at 8:15 prior to the 9 am service. Please sign you children up for VBS by contacting Tara Leithold at 898-9098 or fill out a form at church.
Cookie Dough
Cookie dough Cookie dough is finally going to be delivered. It will be here on Wed. July 29th. The truck will be at church between8 -10 in the morning. Please come and pick up your dough on Wed. Bring you check book and pay for the dough. We will cash the checks on Monday Aug. 3rd. There is extra dough. We do need to sell it all. If you hae questions call Tara
Youth Group
Hello everyone. I will be having a youth group meeting, Weds. July 29th at 6:00 pm. I know it is the middle of summer already, but I think we can pull off a summer event or two yet. I would like to also figure a tentative date for chili supper. I would like to see as many youth group members and parents as possible attend so we can get a good idea what ideas will work the best. Memorials and Gifts
Our Memorial and Gift program is one in which members of Gloria Dei can designate money in remembrance of people who have died (when you see, for example, “Memorials to be given…” in obituaries, often the option is to donate money to a specific or undesignated fund at church) or in honor of someone during a special occasion, such as births, weddings, graduations, confirmations and other celebrations of life. Dee Langohr and Mary Agnew are the chair persons of our Memorial and Gift Committee and periodically in the newsletter you will see memorial or honorarium gifts to funds such as: roof, coffee bar, worship supplies, church furniture, parking lot paving and undesignated (giving the committee a chance to confer about where the funds are most needed when distributing a gift.) We welcome you to utilize this as an option to remember and honor your loved ones. Pastor Vicki has donated gifts this month to the operating fund and building fund in honor of Jeremy and Tammy (Meyer) Aschenbach’s wedding and Sarah (Hageman) and Mike Gundert’s wedding!

Glorious Young Moms
We have a wonderful group of young moms meeting once a month at 6ish (because that’s the life of a mom!) on the first Wednesday of every month at 6ish at El Camino. All young moms are welcome!
Wednesday Worship Service
We now offer two worship services. In addition to our Sunday morning 9:00am service we celebrate worship on Wednesdays at 7pm. Holy Communion is served weekly at both services.

Gloria Dei is currently accepting donations for our rummage sale which will be held on Friday July 31 and Saturday August 1! Please put all donations in the play room! Thanks!

Dear Friends,
As most of you have now heard, we have had some security issues with the building. The church has been broken into at least seven times. One of the people who had been breaking in was apprehended. It was discovered he was using my office computer to download pornography (one of many computers in New Holstein and Kiel as he’s facing numerous charges in three counties) and taking small items from my office and the church.
As you can imagine, this was very unsettling for me to say the least. As the police were attempting to apprehend him, we as church minister and council could not make announcements about what was occurring to cooperate with their efforts. You may have noticed, for example, that I was not in my office for the several weeks. As my computer was destroyed, I am still working from home sometimes. Please know I am still always available to you and don’t hesitate to call my cell phone 920-716-0661 if you need to reach me and have not located me at church.
One of the things I’ve had to do as a result of the break ins is fill out a victim’s report/remittance form. In addition to indicating the expenses for what was lost in the break, I also had to make my suggestion for the sentencing of the offender.
I found myself staring at the page for a long time wondering what to suggest. I was at war with myself, because the part of me that felt angry, violated and victimized wanted him to pay! Another part of me remembered the restorative justice program task force I was a part of a few years ago, that we had an adult forum after a Sunday service at church about, also a few years ago, and wondered if it would be more productive to suggest this as a part of sentencing.
Restorative Justice is a theory of justice that focuses on crime and wrongdoing as acted against the individual or community rather than the state. In restorative justice processes, the person who has harmed takes responsibility for their actions and the person who has been harmed may take a central role in the process, in many instances receiving an apology and reparation directly or indirectly from the person who has caused them harm. Restorative processes which foster dialogue between the offender and the victim show the highest rates of victim satisfaction, true accountability by the offender, and reduced tendency to relapse into the previous behavior.
I thought about this man the police apprehended, a kid really, a 19 year old, and his recurring behavior and punishment. He has many previous convictions and concurrent convictions with ours. Going to jail is not making an impact on him. As we received the name of the person, two of the members of our church council have had him as a student in their special education programs. Suddenly a man breaking into my office in the middle of the night using church property inappropriately, had a face, a name, a history.
I wondered – what if I, and perhaps we, if you were willing, were to instead of simply being updated as to where he is in the court system, as it effects us, were to offer to be part of the restorative justice program with him? To allow him to take accountability for what he has done and make reparations along with building a relationship with us? What if we were to insist that he come to know and care about the people he’s harmed?
I have been amazed by you over the years as you have taken young people under your wing. From the beginning when our little ones are born and baptized, as they grow and are in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, in our confirmation mentoring program, to the children who are “ours,” and even in reaching out to invite other children, like our Tina Checkie, who constantly tells me how much our presence in her life has made all the difference in shaping her course. What if we could also by coming to forgive and care for this young man be a part of inviting him, in Jesus’ name, to a different future?
A key piece in the restorative justice program working is the offender’s willingness to participate. He may not choose to do so or be given the opportunity to do so, but this does not mean we cannot keep him in our prayers, and I ask you to keep him in yours as he’s in mine. If he would agree to be a part of the restorative justice program, I ask that you prayerfully consider participating along with me.

President’s Thoughts
Carol and I went to the 2009 Synod Assembly. If you ever want to be rejuvenated this is the place to go. Our own Pastor Vicki was on the planning committee. The Assembly gave us ideas to help build upon the foundation of Gloria Dei.
The speakers, church consultant Rev./Dr. Dave Daubert and ELCA statistician Rev. Ken Inskeep gave five effective characteristics of vibrant and growing congregations. These are:
1. God is real to people. What has God done today in your lives? Accept Christ as a gift!
2. The Biblical Story matters. We need to consider stories from the Bible. Act out, ask people about their view of person in story. Put story in real life. Need Adult Bible Study!
3. Ministry is a shared project. The Pastor is not the only Minister. Prayer is everyone’s job! Teach how to pray and try prayer in small groups.
4. There is a willingness to do a part of what God is up to. Christ as a mentor. Build relationships with fellow man.
5. People expect transformation. They want to be different on Monday!

Dear Friends,
As most of you have now heard, we have had some security issues with the building. The church has been broken into at least seven times. One of the people who had been breaking in was apprehended. It was discovered he was using my office computer to download pornography (one of many computers in New Holstein and Kiel as he’s facing numerous charges in three counties) and taking small items from my office and the church.
As you can imagine, this was very unsettling for me to say the least. As the police were attempting to apprehend him, we as church minister and council could not make announcements about what was occurring to cooperate with their efforts. You may have noticed, for example, that I was not in my office for the several weeks. As my computer was destroyed, I am still working from home sometimes. Please know I am still always available to you and don’t hesitate to call my cell phone 920-716-0661 if you need to reach me and have not located me at church.
One of the things I’ve had to do as a result of the break ins is fill out a victim’s report/remittance form. In addition to indicating the expenses for what was lost in the break, I also had to make my suggestion for the sentencing of the offender.
I found myself staring at the page for a long time wondering what to suggest. I was at war with myself, because the part of me that felt angry, violated and victimized wanted him to pay! Another part of me remembered the restorative justice program task force I was a part of a few years ago, that we had an adult forum after a Sunday service at church about, also a few years ago, and wondered if it would be more productive to suggest this as a part of sentencing.
Restorative Justice is a theory of justice that focuses on crime and wrongdoing as acted against the individual or community rather than the state. In restorative justice processes, the person who has harmed takes responsibility for their actions and the person who has been harmed may take a central role in the process, in many instances receiving an apology and reparation directly or indirectly from the person who has caused them harm. Restorative processes which foster dialogue between the offender and the victim show the highest rates of victim satisfaction, true accountability by the offender, and reduced tendency to relapse into the previous behavior.
I thought about this man the police apprehended, a kid really, a 19 year old, and his recurring behavior and punishment. He has many previous convictions and concurrent convictions with ours. Going to jail is not making an impact on him. As we received the name of the person, two of the members of our church council have had him as a student in their special education programs. Suddenly a man breaking into my office in the middle of the night using church property inappropriately, had a face, a name, a history.
I wondered – what if I, and perhaps we, if you were willing, were to instead of simply being updated as to where he is in the court system, as it effects us, were to offer to be part of the restorative justice program with him? To allow him to take accountability for what he has done and make reparations along with building a relationship with us? What if we were to insist that he come to know and care about the people he’s harmed?
I have been amazed by you over the years as you have taken young people under your wing. From the beginning when our little ones are born and baptized, as they grow and are in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, in our confirmation mentoring program, to the children who are “ours,” and even in reaching out to invite other children, like our Tina Checkie, who constantly tells me how much our presence in her life has made all the difference in shaping her course. What if we could also by coming to forgive and care for this young man be a part of inviting him, in Jesus’ name, to a different future?
A key piece in the restorative justice program working is the offender’s willingness to participate. He may not choose to do so or be given the opportunity to do so, but this does not mean we cannot keep him in our prayers, and I ask you to keep him in yours as he’s in mine. If he would agree to be a part of the restorative justice program, I ask that you prayerfully consider participating along with me.

President’s Thoughts
Carol and I went to the 2009 Synod Assembly. If you ever want to be rejuvenated this is the place to go. Our own Pastor Vicki was on the planning committee. The Assembly gave us ideas to help build upon the foundation of Gloria Dei.
The speakers, church consultant Rev./Dr. Dave Daubert and ELCA statistician Rev. Ken Inskeep gave five effective characteristics of vibrant and growing congregations. These are:
1. God is real to people. What has God done today in your lives? Accept Christ as a gift!
2. The Biblical Story matters. We need to consider stories from the Bible. Act out, ask people about their view of person in story. Put story in real life. Need Adult Bible Study!
3. Ministry is a shared project. The Pastor is not the only Minister. Prayer is everyone’s job! Teach how to pray and try prayer in small groups.
4. There is a willingness to do a part of what God is up to. Christ as a mentor. Build relationships with fellow man.
5. People expect transformation. They want to be different on Monday!

Memorials and Gifts
Our Memorial and Gift program is one in which members of Gloria Dei can designate money in remembrance of people who have died (when you see, for example, “Memorials to be given…” in obituaries, often the option is to donate money to a specific or undesignated fund at church) or in honor of someone during a special occasion, such as births, weddings, graduations, confirmations and other celebrations of life. Dee Langohr and Mary Agnew are the chair persons of our Memorial and Gift Committee and periodically in the newsletter you will see memorial or honorarium gifts to funds such as: roof, coffee bar, worship supplies, church furniture, parking lot paving and undesignated (giving the committee a chance to confer about where the funds are most needed when distributing a gift.) The bookshelves in the fire side room, for example, were created from a memorial gift. We welcome you to utilize this as an option to remember and honor your loved ones.

Its camping season again and time to sign up for our annual Chuch campout. This year we will be camping from Friday August 21st thru Sunday, August 23rd, the cost is $42.00 plus $6.30 for the reservation. Sign up is on the kiosk. If you have any questions you may call Broderick at (920)849-3991

Glorious Young Moms
We have a wonderful group of young moms meeting once a month at 6ish (because that’s the life of a mom!) on the first Wednesday of every month at 6ish at El Camino. All young moms are welcome!
Wednesday Worship Service
We now offer two worship services. In addition to our Sunday morning 9:00am service we celebrate worship on Wednesdays at 7pm. Holy Communion is served weekly at both services.

Dear Friends,
After a long, hard winter, signs of summer begin to blossom around us! The days are getting longer, and occasionally warmer, gardeners are busy planting flowers and vegetables, summer festivals and celebrations like graduation parties, camping outings and vacations are being arranged and everyone with whom I speak, it seems, is more than ready to spend as much time as they can soaking up some sunshine!
Summer is a time when we can start to see less of our church friends, as weekends fill up with those things we enjoy doing, and need to do, to connect with family and find rest. We at Gloria Dei understand this and celebrate with you the joy and meaning you find in your summer adventures. We also remind you of lots of great opportunities to share in worship, fellowship, learning and serving during the summer months!
Please remember that we now have a Wednesday evening worship service at 7pm with weekly communion in addition to our Sunday morning 9am worship service! Why not even invite new friends to join you at one of our worship services?
Become a steward of your church building and grounds in the summer months by signing up to clean the church or become a “glorious gardener” by adopting a patch of the church landscaping to tend to during the summer months!
Volunteer to serve with friends at one of the many outreach events we have going on! See Mike Stephany if you can help in any way with the Junior High 3:3 Basketball Tourney being held at Gloria Dei Saturday June 27 and Sunday June 28! Volunteer at Road America in the concession stands on Sunday, July 19 to raise money for our youth and operating fund! Donate items and volunteer to work at our church rummage sale on Friday July 31 and Saturday, August 1!
Partake in summer fellowship activities. The Allees will once again be hosting a Luau at their home on Saturday, August 1 for adult fellowship. Gloria Deiers will be heading to Calumet County Park for camping on Friday August 21-Sunday August 23! If you are a young mom, take an opportunity to gather with other young moms on the first Wednesday of the month at El Camino at 6ish!
Expand your Biblical knowledge by joining the Thursday morning 6:30am Bible Study group at Terre Verde in Chilton. Volunteer to be a Vacation Bible School teacher!
Remember also to continue your financial stewardship of your church during the summer.

President’s Thoughts
A reminder of what’s going on at Gloria Dei and how you can help!
If you can find time as a family to help clean at Gloria Dei that would be great! We do not have a janitor at Gloria Dei; we decided to save money by having families choose a week to clean when they have time. We have a list on the Kiosk of what needs to be done and you can do the cleaning anytime during the week that you can make it. This has been working well so far. A great thank you to all who have helped!
You can also help Gloria Dei by buying scrip cards at the table by the front door on Sunday or Wednesday. You may buy cards for food, gas, and other items which does not cost any more than you would normally pay for these items, but Gloria Dei would get a per cent from the retail store.
We had our annual Dinner Theater coming in May! You were be treated a great play called “The Attack of the Lake People” and a fine dinner to go along with it. Thank you to all the Gloria Dei folks who worked together on this great under-taking!

Parents, Tara Leithold is hosting a parent meeting regarding Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Please plan to attend following worship this Sunday, May 31! We are in search of a Sunday School Coordinator. All the Rotation Sunday School lessons are already written. The Sunday School coordinator would recruit volunteer teachers. Dear Friends,
After a long, hard winter, signs of summer begin to blossom around us! The days are getting longer, and occasionally warmer, gardeners are busy planting flowers and vegetables, summer festivals and celebrations like graduation parties, camping outings and vacations are being arranged and everyone with whom I speak, it seems, is more than ready to spend as much time as they can soaking up some sunshine!
Summer is a time when we can start to see less of our church friends, as weekends fill up with those things we enjoy doing, and need to do, to connect with family and find rest. We at Gloria Dei understand this and celebrate with you the joy and meaning you find in your summer adventures. We also remind you of lots of great opportunities to share in worship, fellowship, learning and serving during the summer months!
Please remember that we now have a Wednesday evening worship service at 7pm with weekly communion in addition to our Sunday morning 9am worship service! Why not even invite new friends to join you at one of our worship services?
Become a steward of your church building and grounds in the summer months by signing up to clean the church or become a “glorious gardener” by adopting a patch of the church landscaping to tend to during the summer months!
Volunteer to serve with friends at one of the many outreach events we have going on! See Mike Stephany if you can help in any way with the Junior High 3:3 Basketball Tourney being held at Gloria Dei Saturday June 27 and Sunday June 28! Volunteer at Road America in the concession stands on Sunday, July 19 to raise money for our youth and operating fund! Donate items and volunteer to work at our church rummage sale on Friday July 31 and Saturday, August 1!
Partake in summer fellowship activities. The Allees will once again be hosting a Luau at their home on Saturday, August 1 for adult fellowship. Gloria Deiers will be heading to Calumet County Park for camping on Friday August 21-Sunday August 23! If you are a young mom, take an opportunity to gather with other young moms on the first Wednesday of the month at El Camino at 6ish!
Expand your Biblical knowledge by joining the Thursday morning 6:30am Bible Study group at Terre Verde in Chilton. Volunteer to be a Vacation Bible School teacher!
Remember also to continue your financial stewardship of your church during the summer.

Memorials and Gifts
Pastor Vicki has given a gift to the operating fund in honor of Hank and Kelly Aull, Jonah and Renee Kilty and Jeremiah and Amy Schaefer.
Our Memorial and Gift program is one in which members of Gloria Dei can designate money in remembrance of people who have died (when you see, for example, “Memorials to be given…” in obituaries, often the option is to donate money to a specific or undesignated fund at church) or in honor of someone during a special occasion, such as births, weddings, graduations, confirmations and other celebrations of life. Dee Langohr and Mary Agnew are the chair persons of our Memorial and Gift Committee and periodically in the newsletter you will see memorial or honorarium gifts to funds such as: roof, coffee bar, worship supplies, church furniture, parking lot paving and undesignated (giving the committee a chance to confer about where the funds are most needed when distributing a gift.) The bookshelves in the fire side room, for example, were created from a memorial gift. We welcome you to utilize this as an option to remember and honor your loved ones.

Gloria Dei Church Camp Out
Its camping season again and time to sign up for our annual Chuch campout. This year we will be camping from Friday, August 21st thru Sunday, August 23rd, the cost is $42.00 plus $6.30 for the reservation. Sign up is on the kiosk. If you have any questions you may call Broderick at (920)849-3991

President’s Thoughts
A reminder of what’s going on at Gloria Dei and how you can help!
If you can find time as a family to help clean at Gloria Dei that would be great! We do not have a janitor at Gloria Dei; we decided to save money by having families choose a week to clean when they have time. We have a list on the Kiosk of what needs to be done and you can do the cleaning anytime during the week that you can make it. This has been working well so far. A great thank you to all who have helped!
You can also help Gloria Dei by buying scrip cards at the table by the front door on Sunday or Wednesday. You may buy cards for food, gas, and other items which does not cost any more than you would normally pay for these items, but Gloria Dei would get a per cent from the retail store.
We had our annual Dinner Theater coming in May! You were be treated a great play called “The Attack of the Lake People” and a fine dinner to go along with it. Thank you to all the Gloria Dei folks who worked together on this great under-taking!
Tara Leithold is led us in a cookie dough sale as a money making project for Gloria Dei! Thank you to all who helped out!

Glorious Young Moms
We have a wonderful group of young moms meeting once a month at 6ish (because that’s the life of a mom!) on the first Wednesday of every month at 6ish at El Camino. All young moms are welcome!
Wednesday Worship Service
We now offer two worship services. In addition to our Sunday morning 9:00am service we celebrate worship on Wednesdays at 7pm. Holy Communion is served weekly at both services.
A Message from Your Treasurer
At this time our operating and building funds are very low, with the operating fund needing serious immediate attention. We must pay Pastor Vicki’s board of pensions health insurance or it will lapse, the building insurance is due, the copier bill is due, among other bills.
Please continue to pray for the ministry of Gloria Dei. Search your heart if you are able to meet or increase your pledges to the operating and building committee or consider becoming first time givers to the operating and building fund so we can continue our mission of making Christ known! Announcements for the Week!
Hi Everyone,
Just some announcements for the week! A reminder that the dinner theater is going on this coming Friday and Saturday! My parents and I had a chance to attend on Sunday and the show is hilarious, the meal fantastic and the service impeccable! Call Dianne Fett for tickets 898-5103. The dinner theater group also is looking for someone to video tape a performance; if you are able to do that, let Dianne or me know! Also, we are still in need of apple tarts for both performances and clean up assistance at 9ish pm on Saturday, May 16th!
Cookie dough sheets are due TODAY so Tara can have a count to send in tomorrow morning! A reminder that all checks are to be written to you and then one check by you is made out to Gloria Dei. The checks will not be cashed until after dough pick up on June 4, so you still have time to collect money until pick up time!
Be sure to drop in to say farewell to Jean Haack on Sunday, May 17th! A bunch of thanks to Jean for the many ways she's served our church and community over the years!
Mark your calendars for Graduate Sunday - May 31rst! Our Chilton students graduate on the original date we had chosen, June 7, and we want to be sure to honor everyone - so please attend on May 31st to wish the students you have raised well in their new adventures! It's always a fun celebration :)
The person who was breaking into church has been apprehended. Thank you for your prayers, and please continue to pray for this person to find a new direction in life, and for us as a congregation as we consider how to respond.
For those of you that have friended me of facebook, or those of you that would like to, in addition to posting announcements on our blog site and in emails, I will also create a Gloria Dei group on facebook and invite you to connect with one another in that group!

Dinner Theater Tickets, Kitchen Help May 9th & Apple Torte
Hi Everyone,
As you've heard, the dinner theater is coming up this weekend, Sat. May 9 at 6:30pm, Sunday May 10 at 4pm, Fri May 15 at 6:30pm and Sat May 16 at 6:30pm. The show is a comedy called "Attack of the Lake People" by the hilarious Pat Cook! Order tickets following worship or by calling Dianne Fett 898-5103
We invite you to attend the show and are in need of one adult kitchen helper on May 9th (please call Mike Stephany 838-1398), and lots of desserts - please see the recipe below, or if you have your own recipe for an apple torte, feel free to use it! Apple tortes are needed for May 10, 15 & 16. Thanks in advance and blessings :) PV
BEVERLY'S BAVARIAN APPLE TORTE
1/2 c. softened butter
1/3 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
1 c. all purpose flour
Cream Cheese Filling (see below)
Apple Topping (see below)
1/2 c. chopped walnuts or pecans
Cream butter and sugar in small mixing bowl; stir in vanilla. Add flour and mix well. Spread in bottom and 2" up sides of a greased 9" springform pan. Spread Cream Cheese Filling evenly over pastry; spoon Apple Topping over filling. Sprinkle with nuts. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes; reduce temperature to 400 degrees and continue baking 25 minutes. Cool before removing from pan. Yield: 8 to 10 servings.

1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened
1/4 c. sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Combine cream cheese and sugar; add egg and vanilla, mixing well. Yield: about 1 1/3 cups.

Dear Friends,
The other day I caught part of Diane Rehm’s radio program on NPR. She was interviewing Tori Murden McClure regarding her new book A Pearl in the Storm: How I Found My Heart in the Middle of the Ocean, a story of her journey as the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean by rowboat. The interview was so fascinating I picked up the book!
The thing that captured my heart most in Murden McClure’s storytelling was her discovery of WHAT she was REALLY wrestling with in her in the row boat on the Atlantic. Indeed, it was the issue she wrestled with in all areas of life. In the Atlantic’s solitude and storms, Murden McClure had to face that although she’d always been a conqueror of sorts in the realms of knowledge, social justice and athleticism, ever pushing herself to learn more, give more, be more, no matter what she did or how mighty she became, she could NOT conquer her own sense of helplessness in the face of human suffering.
There is one profound moment in the book when Murden McClure articulates her dilemma. It’s as she’s training to be a minister, at Harvard Divinity school and working as a chaplain in an inner city Boston Hospital (one of many fascinating vocations she explores). The grief upon grief she witnesses in the homeless, the hopeless, those suffering and dying, those who mirror elements of her own life’s suffering and augment it with their own, begin to bear down on her, and she finds herself turning to a wise patient she often visits, crying tears of compassion for the things she witnesses, but is not able to do much about. The patient gently wipes her tears away and tells her, “You must let your heart be broken by the things that break the heart of God.”
Immediately Murden McClure recognizes the lesson as “too advanced for me,” yet the one she will continue to wrestle with in her life’s journey. “My heart was breaking. God’s heart was breaking.” She says. “These things anyone could understand. But being at ease with this brokenness, being OK with it, seemed like surrendering to helplessness. This I could not do. This lesson was too advanced.”
As the book concludes Murden McClure reveals her most profound insight in her Atlantic journey and life journey is that she’d always assumed helplessness was a malevolent force outside of her that she had to defeat. She had an “a-ha” moment of discovery when realizing helplessness was but a part of her human brokenness. “It is our brokenness, our helplessness, which makes us human. I thought I’d been trying to earn God’s forgiveness (by conquering helplessness), but the forgiveness I needed was my own. I had only to forgive myself…and accept my dragons, make peace with my helplessness….so I could be accessible to the love of other people and open to returning that love.”
Suddenly, in that discovery, one night in the middle of a hurricane on the Atlantic, Murden McClure feels a peace that passes understanding and a sense of atonement. She discovers “Our helplessness makes us human; love is what makes humanity bearable.” She determines to spend the rest of her life embracing her helplessness and letting it actually be a connecting point to others in their predicament of the same human condition, “solved” only when they reach out to each other in the love of God.
It’s a wonderful Easter story, isn’t it?! For who discovers themselves to be in the predicament of helpless human brokenness but the disciples of Jesus during this season?! Jesus closest friends had spent their journey trying to be conquerors of helplessness and expecting Jesus to be the messiah of their dreams, slaying the dragon of helplessness as a warrior who would conquer the city Jerusalem, jumping through their hoops of success, as a rabbi who would outsmart any full of special knowledge and charm.
How does Jesus conquer helplessness?! Only by entering the brokenness of being fully human in dying, humiliatingly on a cross. It was the only way He could show God’s heart break, you see, for the suffering in the world. Jesus takes this suffering into Himself, and raises victorious from the dead!
And what is God’s greatest blessing in the rising?!
The connection to one another not in our helplessness forever, but instead, in Jesus’ victorious love; a love, like Murden McClure learns, that is the only thing that makes our human condition of helplessness bearable.
As disciples of God, we may row ourselves into a metaphorical mid of the Atlantic many times over in a life time, frustrated by our human condition of helplessness. May we remember that to be an Easter people we need only trust again the only thing that makes our human condition bearable; Christ’s love, which is so often found in giving and receiving love to each other.

The non-fiction book club’s next selection is American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House by Jon Meacham. Politicos who believe the American presidency wields too much power can blame Andrew Jackson. This biography, by Newsweek editor Jon Meacham, argues that Jackson transformed the presidency from being subservient to Congress to an independent and vital factor in government by crisis and force of will. Jackson made himself the center of every controversy during his two terms and was the first to bypass Congress and to appeal directly to the people. Meacham's account enlivens and humanizes the guy we see on the front of the $20 bill. Please let Sue Salzsieder or Mike Field know if you are interested in reading this book. We'll determine a date to meet when we've all finished reading it.

Farewell to Jean Haack
As many of you know, Jean Haack will be moving to Land O’ Lakes this summer. We are very sad to see Jean depart from us! Prairie Burn
Burning the prairie every 3-5 years helps control weeds and trees from establishing in the prairie. The growing points of native prairie plants are below the soil in early spring, the growing points of non-native weeds are generally above the soil. So, when a fire goes through the prairie the prairie plants are insulated by the soil, and the weed are toasted.
The burn has been re-scheduled because of rain for 10:30am following worship Sunday May 3. This will require cooperation from the weather --no rain, little wind. Shouldn’t take much more than an hour. Bring an old broom. You can just show up but if you would lie or let me know ahead and I will get a hold of you if the date needs to be changed. jeanlhaack@charter.net 920-483-0333

Dear Friends,
The other day I caught part of Diane Rehm’s radio program on NPR. She was interviewing Tori Murden McClure regarding her new book A Pearl in the Storm: How I Found My Heart in the Middle of the Ocean, a story of her journey as the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean by rowboat. Farewell to Jean Haack
As many of you know, Jean Haack will be moving to Land O’ Lakes this summer. We are very sad to see Jean depart from us! Please join us for a farewell reception for her following worship on Sunday, May 17th! Thank you Jean for the countless ways you’ve been of service to our church family and community!
Prairie Burn
Burning the prairie every 3-5 years helps control weeds and trees from establishing in the prairie. The growing points of native prairie plants are below the soil in early spring, the growing points of non-native weeds are generally above the soil. So, when a fire goes through the prairie the prairie plants are insulated by the soil, and the weed are toasted.
The burn has been re-scheduled because of rain for 10:30am following worship Sunday May 3. This will require cooperation from the weather --no rain, little wind. Shouldn’t take much more than an hour. Bring an old broom. You can just show up but if you would lie or let me know ahead and I will get a hold of you if the date needs to be changed. jeanlhaack@charter.net 920-483-0333
